about

This African-American work song is believed to have been first collected by American scholars Howard W. Odum and Newman Ivey White in the early 1900s.

Popularised via the iconic Clarence Ashley and Doc Watson Smithsonian Folkways recording, this traditional song (author unknown) has been sung by luminaries from Jerry Garcia and David Grisman to Mike Seeger.

It describes a ‘walking boss’—a travelling boss or foreman who would oversee a number of worksites throughout a given district.
